Lockheed Model Viewer
-
What is it?
The Model Viewer is an interactive display commissioned by Lockheed Martin to be installed at trade shows internationally. It allows visitors to interact with 3D models of Lockheed’s aircraft, spacecraft, and deep space imagery.
-
The Ask
Concept, develop, and build a two-piece display that was capable of being easily packed and shipped for installation by union labor anywhere in the world. The aesthetic and polish of the build must be consistent with the future-forward identity of the client.

The Build
I rendered a breadth of form factors and user interactions. After a few rounds of concepting with the client, a form was decided upon. Within a month I translated the design into drawings that our fabrication team could produce.
Concepts
Weeks 4-6:
I also built out a custom road case to allow the display to travel safely. Finally, I designed the install guide for the labor tasked with unpacking the display.
Execution
Week 2:
With the form factor selected, we tested the ergonomics of the selected design to refine the user experience before proceeding to production. This rig allowed our digital product team to develop the application the build would use.
Weeks 3-6:
I incorporated our learnings from the ergonomics study and finalized the CAD for the build before handing the design off to the shop. I continued to play a support role for the shop during the build.
Week 1:
The first week was spent developing and refining a variety of concepts and form factors for the client to choose from. From there we established CFM and content
Outcome
The piece traveled to trade shows all over the U.S. and Europe. The client’s satisfaction with the build inspired them to commission a second unit for permanent installation at their headquarters while the first build continued to make appearances at public events.
